The scaling of Flash technology presents challenges with respect to performance and endurance making low-cost, high-density SSDs unsuitable for enterprise use cases. In this presentation we present SALSA, a software layer that can elevate the performance and endurance of such SSDs to meet the enterprise requirements for certain classes of workloads. To reduce cost, SALSA moves complexity from hardware to software, and employs data reduction and data segregation techniques. By transforming the user access patterns to be as Flash-friendly as possible, SALSA achieves a dramatic reduction in write amplification. The resulting performance and endurance improvement indicates our approach to be a very promising one even with TLC Flash of 19nm and beyond.
